Grant Guidelines

Mission of the Ahearn Foundation

The Ahearn Foundation maintains and improves the quality of life in Binghamton and Broome County.

Capital projects and one-time, non-operating needs, that benefit Broome County are preferred. While health and education needs have traditionally been given priority, the Foundation also supports cultural and environmental projects which benefit a broad number of residents within the county.

Organizations applying for grants from the Ahearn Foundation must be fiscally responsible and recognized as tax-exempt under the Internal Revenue Code, generally with a 501(c)(3) designation. Grants to individuals and other organizations will not be considered. Furthermore, grants are not made for operating expenses, continuing support, coverage of deficits, political purposes, or to individual churches or religious organizations for religious purposes.

The Advisory Committee of the Ahearn Foundation meets annually, in the fall, to consider requests for funding of grants to charitable organizations in Broome County. Therefore, the deadline for grant application is August 1, 2010. We will notify you of the Committee's decision within one week of our meeting. Grants in the past have generally ranged from $1,000 to $10,000.

Contact the Ahearn Foundation for a copy of our Grant Proposal Cover Sheet and Checklist, which must be submitted with a grant request. You may also download it on the How to Apply page.

In general, the submittal package must also include:

  • One paragraph executive summary
  • Amount of grant requested
  • Project description, objective, and need.
  • Supporting information concerning the project, such as the benefits to Broome County residents, the project budget, proposed timetable for the project, key personnel, and parameters for measurement of the success of the project.
  • Description of your organization (one paragraph executive summary)
  • Supporting information concerning the organization, such as the history and purpose of your organization, verification of IRS tax-exemption, and evidence of sound management and a healthy financial situation.

Furthermore, please contact the Ahearn Foundation, prior to the grant application, to discuss the suitability of your project for grant consideration.
